Hurricanes Can’t Stop SMART Recovery Conference from Rising Strong!

Posted on October 3, 2017

Things were a little touch-and-go as to whether SMART’s 2017 Annual Conference: Rising Strong would be able to occur in Ft. Lauderdale on September 22-24. But much like the conference theme and SMART’s unstoppable growth, Rising Strong took place as scheduled. The Conference was well attended and received great ratings from the volunteers, meeting participants and treatment professionals who attended.

SMART remains grateful for the financial support of our sponsors, Synergy Recovery Center/Synergy Executive, and the Florida branch of NAADAC.

The President’s Address by Dr. Joe Gerstein, and Guerrilla Tactics for the Hostile, Difficult, Disengaged, and Over-Engaged Participant Part 2 by Dr. David Saenz were the two favorite presentations of attendees.

SMART’s new 5-Year Strategic Plan was debuted at the Conference, and included in many of the comments during Dr. Gerstein’s President’s Address. A copy of the Strategic Plan can be found here.

“Great conference, well organized and concise, no wasted time. I learned things I will use and facilitate meetings a little differently.” Dan Piddington, Synergy Recovery Center and SMART Facilitator

Also enjoyed were new results from the Peer Alternatives to Addiction (PAL) study, presented by Dr. Sarah Zemore, and a research review by Dr. William Campbell of the Checkup & Choices app, which when used in conjunction with SMART meetings, is shown to enhance recovery outcomes.  Continue reading

SMART Recovery Conference 2015!

Posted on November 24, 2015

By Dee

Pair of male friends greeting each other with a handshakeAh the SMART Conference this year! This one was quite personal to me, as Cincinnati is my town, so I was just plain excited period. The hotel, super-convenient to the airport, was just lovely. It may have been my favorite of all our hotels (except the one where you can actually sit out on a balcony and overlook the marina. The staff were warm, friendly and SUPER-helpful, and it was just lovely. Extremely conducive to the type of conference we have — people sitting and talking in little groups, comfy chairs and lots of tables and chairs in an open, inviting space. I am seriously going to offer Marriott our compliments and maybe they’ll even give us a bigger discount next time! It was lovely. Continue reading

2014 Annual Conference Videos Are Now Online

SMART Recovery Annual ConferenceMissed it? Want to see it again? SMART’s 2014 Annual Conference is now available for viewing online.

Michael Botticelli, Acting Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (Executive Office of the President) kicked off the celebration of SMART’s 20 years with a resounding reminder that the US national drug control policy includes an understanding that “there are multiple pathways to recovery, that there is no silver bullet for overcoming substance use disorders, no single treatment approach or mutual aid pathway that works for all of us”. He went on to thank SMART for helping countless people find and sustain recovery from substance use disorders over the last 20 years and concluded by presenting a letter from President Obama in recognition of SMART’s 20th Anniversary. This is just one of many highlights from this historic event.

SMARTCON 2014 was streamed live over the internet. This was a first for SMART and was made possible by the generous financial support of an anonymous individual who wanted to make the conference available to those who were unable to attend. The presentations were captured on film and are now available online viewing. Topics covered include:

SMART 101: Tom Horvath, President of SMART Recovery

History of the Recovery Movement: William White, Addiction Historian & Recovery Advocate

Tool Training: Jonathan von Breton, Senior SMART Recovery Online Facilitator

Recovery Advocacy: Tom Coderre (SAMHSA), Tom Horvath (SMART), Steve Gumbley (FAVOR), Peter Gaumond (ONDCP)

Review of SMART’s Strategic Plan

Master Facilitator’s Panel

2014 Joe Gerstein Award Presentation

…and more.

These 2014 SMARTCON presentations and others are now available for online viewing.

Said one conference goer: “This was my first in person exposure to SMART Recovery and I’m blown away by how welcoming everyone was and how professional the attendees and speakers are.

We acknowledge and thank the many volunteers in the D.C. area SMART community for their generous contributions of time and assistance and the AV crew at NGH for their hospitality and excellent behind the scenes work that made everything look and work great!

Thank You! We are grateful to our sponsors: Aton Center, Balance Treatment Center, Center for Motivation & Change, Cliffside Malibu, Muscala Chemical Health Clinic, Practical Recovery, St. Gregory Retreat Center and Sunshine Coast Health Center. Continue reading
