Update on the SMART Recovery Online Message Board
~ Moderator_Quellcrist, SMART Recovery Online Volunteer

mobile applicationThe SMART Recovery Online Message Board has recently undergone a major upgrade. In addition to a fantastic new look, the board now offers several new features that we would love to bring to everyone’s attention.

If you have previously had a chance to check out the message board, you already know that it is a supportive place to talk about your recovery journey, learn how to apply SMART tools to your personal situations, use your own experiences to help others, and share the benefits of your new life abstaining from maladaptive behaviors of all kinds.  As a member of the SMART Online community, you also have access to daily online peer support meetings and a vibrant and supportive chat room that is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Online meetings function much the same as face-to-face SMART addiction recovery meetings, and in our 24/7 chat room you can find everything from supportive listeners for pressing issues, to a little R&R.

Streamlined Registration

If you have not yet had a chance to check out the message board, registration is easy.  To register, click this link.  You will be asked a few questions over two screens and asked to create a username and password.  TIP: Think carefully before choosing a username, since this will be the name you are known by on the message board, in chat, and in meetings for as long as you are a member.  We recommend that you consider not using your real name if anonymity is a priority for you.

New Features

Mobile Access

One of the most requested new features of the message board is the ability to access it through mobile devices. Most smart devices (those with an advanced operating system such as iOS or Android) will be able to view and use the full site using their web browsers.  When you access the site, the board will recognize your mobile device and load the appropriate mobile skin automatically. The mobile skin can make it easier to navigate the site on a smaller screen, but if you want to see the site as it appears on your computer screen, scroll down to the bottom of your mobile screen and click on “Full Site.”

App for navigating the message board

Forum Runner: As an alternative to viewing the board using the browser on your mobile device, you might prefer to use Forum Runner (available through the App Store or GooglePlay for $1.99).  This app can be used to view other forums, as well.  When using Forum Runner, just search for “SMART Recovery” to find the SMART Message Board.  Like the mobile skin, this app can make it easier to use the message board on smaller phone screens.

App for meeting attendance and chat

123FlashChat app: Attending meetings and chatting in our 24/7 chat room on your mobile device is also easy, using the free 123FlashChat app. This app allows Android users to attend both voice and text meetings.  Although the voice option is not available at this time for iOS, Apple users can still attend any of our text meetings (over 15/week) and can also chat in our 24/7 text chat room, using the 123FlashChat app on their iPhones or iPads.

Personal Blogs

Message board participants now have the option of setting up a personal blog and blogging their thoughts and experiences about their recovery journey. Blogs can be set to be either public (viewable to all), or private (only viewable to friends and contacts). By making your blog completely private (only viewable to yourself) you can use it as an online journal.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our tech volunteers, the new updated message board is faster and easier to use, but if you have any questions, you can view a list of frequently asked questions by clicking on “FAQ” on the forum navigation bar, or use this link.

Research has shown that addiction recovery is facilitated by social support, such as the support provided by the SMART Recovery Online Community. Whether you’re looking for information about SMART Recovery tools, looking for meetings or social chat, hoping to engage in a thoughtful exchange of ideas and experiences on a message board forum, or would like to set up a personal blog, the SMART Online Community is available to meet your needs.

When I open the 123flashchat app it asks for a chat id? What is the chat id to be able to attend the meetings in the app (I’m using android)

I don’t know if you were aware, but the Puffin web browser for iPhones DOES allow Flash to play. Maybe our voice chat rooms will work on Puffin.

Thanks for mentioning Puffin, Shaun. Puffin does allow you to get into chat the same way you would using a computer (by clicking on the button in the Navigation Bar labeled “SMART Chat and Meeting Rooms”), but only if you have the full version of Puffin (the free version only gives you a 14 day trial of Flash). You can then chat or attend a text meeting as normal. But, unfortunately, the voice rooms still do not work as desired. You will be able to enter text in the voice room, but you will not hear the speaker nor be able to respond using your microphone. 🙁

I suspect this to be the case for any browser that promises full Flash capabilities for Apple devices.
